Better Talk Now: - Exercise rider Lisa Davidson was aboard Better Talk Now for a 1 ¾ m gallop around the Churchill Downs turf course Friday morning in preparation for the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf.
The 2004 Breeders' Cup Turf champion, who finished seventh last year at Belmont Park, will need some help, as well as helping himself, if he is going to rebound this year.
"Two things must happen. There needs to be an honest pace and he needs to settle the first part of the race," said trainer Graham Motion. "The pace doesn't have to be rapid; it just needs to be honest."
The late-running 7yo gelding will be ridden by regular jockey Ramon Dominguez.
Cacique: - The Danehill horse galloped 1 3/8 m on the main track Friday morning on another chilly morning at Churchill Downs.
Exercise rider Jose Cuevas was aboard on the Irish-bred as trainer Robert Frankel looked on.
Cacique has never run a mile and one-half. Does that concern Frankel?
"The way he ran his last race (a near-two-length victory in the Grade I Man o' War at 11 furlongs in New York, he wasn't getting tired at the end," the trainer said. "And that family (Cacique is a brother or half-brother to stakes winners Banks Hill, Heat Haze and Intercontinental) could run all day. He'll handle the mile-and-a-half."
English Channel: - English Channel, fifth in last year's Turf at Belmont Park, has won four of six starts this year, including a victory in the Turf Classic here in May.
"Even though he ran fourth in the Arlington Million, he proved himself against a strong international field," said trainer Todd Pletcher. "He is always capable of winning any race he is in."
English Channel galloped 1 ¼ m Friday.
Go Deputy: - Go Deputy, a 6yo Deputy Minister horse, has been worse than third only once in six tries at the 1 ½ m Turf distance. He schooled without incident in the paddock on Thursday, and galloped 1 ¼ m Friday morning.
"He's handled soft, yielding and good turf," said trainer Todd Pletcher. "He also is a Grade I winner, so he should be able to work out a decent trip."
Icy Atlantic: - Icy Atlantic, the Turf's likely pacesetter, will be asked to set the table for English Channel, as he did in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park on Oct. 7.
"That's his role," said trainer Todd Pletcher, after Icy Atlantic galloped 1 ¼ m Friday morning. "He is there to make sure there is a legitimate pace in a very tough race."
Hurricane Run: - The 4yo son of Montjeu galloped 1m on the main track Friday morning, his final exercise of the week.
Elizabeth Fabre, wife of trainer Andre Fabre, was on hand to supervise final preparations for the Turf. Fabre is not expected to be on hand to saddle Hurricane Run Saturday.
The Irish-bred, who has raced in Ireland, England and France this year, won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe last year and was fourth in this year's renewal on Oct. 1. He will be making his third start in five weeks Saturday, as he comes off a third in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 14. He will be ridden Saturday by Christophe Soumillon, who was aboard in the colt's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot in July.
Red Rocks: - The Irish-bred colt was out on the main track for a 1m canter in company with David Junior.
The two horses are trained by Brian Meehan, who said he was very happy with the way Red Rocks is coming to his race.
"I'm delighted that he's done so well here," Meehan said of his 3yo Galileo colt. "He looked very good today, very sharp. I'll take him to the track early Saturday morning for a jog to make sure he's not too sharp when he comes out tomorrow afternoon.
Red Rocks, who will be looking for his first graded stakes victory in the Turf, will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, who was aboard in his maiden score in April.
Rush Bay: - The Tom Amoss-trained 4yo, jogged and galloped 1 m on Friday at Churchill in his final preparations for the Turf.
"We're all set," said Amoss. "We just have to lead them over."
Scorpion: - Although the names on their saddlecloths were obscured by blankets, Scorpion went to the turf course about 8:15 Friday morning in company with trainer Aidan O'Brien's runners in the Mile, Ad Valorem and Aussie Rules.
With the turf course closing at 8:30 because of early post time, there was a quick turnaround when O'Brien returned from the main track after supervising George Washington's gallop.
"Everything was fine with him and the lad was happy," the trainer said. "He just cantered a mile to have a look at the place. They really didn't do anything."
Silverfoot: - Trainer Dallas Stewart sent the Chrysalis Stable gelding out for a 1 m jog Friday morning.
Stewart said everything was fine with Silverfoot, who has won all four of his starts on the turf at Churchill Downs.
T. H. Approval: - The long-winded gray was on the turf course at Churchill Downs Friday morning and galloped 1 ½ m under exercise rider Edmundo Cedeno just after 8:15.
Trainer Eduardo Inda supervised the exercise as his rider let him run through the lane as the 5yo son of With Approval finished up his drill.
"The clockers said they got him his last quarter in 25," the conditioner noted. "I just wanted him to use a little speed late; something to get him ready for his race tomorrow - to open his lungs up. He's a little lazy in the mornings and this is good for him."
Inda said his rider, the California-based Alex Solis, would be coming to Louisville later Friday.
